When taking portraits, the usual advice is to look for soft light. For example, by taking photos just before sunset. But you can also get beautiful portraits by working in bright sunshine in the middle of the day.
The hard contrasts of midday light work especially well in black and white. So try looking for an image with both very light and very dark areas.
Make sure you pay close attention to where the shadows fall. A dark shadow across a face, or bright spots on the face, can quickly become distracting. With a portrait, it often works well to point the face slightly upwards, towards the light source or the sun.
