Want to photograph young children? Give the child something to do. Older children can often be patient for a little while, but with very young children, their attention is often gone after just a few seconds.
By letting the child play freely, they behave more naturally and remain more cheerful. As a photographer, you can of course play along too. This helps the children get used to you, so they can really be themselves.
Use a slightly wider lens so you can play close to the child and still take photos.
You can also hold a toy just beside your head or camera to draw the child's attention to your camera. This way, you can combine playing and taking photos, resulting in some great pictures.
