Blurry Christmas Photos (Advent Calendar)

Last Sunday I took the photo for our annual Christmas card. As a photographer, you can't settle for a generic card that you send out. We took the photo on location and, of course, the children were not exactly keen.

Well, our daughter joined in obediently, but Mika, our son, started grumbling before I had even got the camera out. I quickly took about ten photos in the rapidly fading twilight.

It looked fine on the rear screen. It was also cold outside, so I thought it would do. When I got home, it turned out every photo was out of focus.

Ouch...
Beginner's mistake.

Shooting with a 135mm telephoto lens and using a shutter speed of barely 1/100th.
And with young children. They never sit still anyway.

One of them was just about good enough. I added a bit extra with the texture slider to make it look a little sharper. That was the one we went with. Otherwise, we would have had to go back out into the cold.

These are the sort of mistakes that are actually easy to prevent.

How?

The video above comes from the Getting Started with Photography course on Photofacts Academy. There, Nando's calm explanations show you how to gain control over your camera.

Yesterday we started the Photofacts Academy Advent Calendar. Of course, we sent it out right during a Gmail outage. Some subscribers therefore didn't receive the email, which is why I've also posted it as a blog now.
