Beautiful portrait light on the ground

Portrait photography is largely about finding the most beautiful light. That light has to fall on your model just right. During a shoot today with Michelle, I also looked for beautiful light for a portrait photo and found it on the ground.

If I am looking for beautiful light, I am mainly looking for beautiful shadows. I like it when the main light falls on the model mainly from one side. The shadow this creates gives your image a nice sense of depth.
The forest floor in this photo helped with that. The indirect light from above, I had blocked the direct sunlight with a softbox that was not otherwise being used at that moment, falls nicely on the model, while the dark ground ensures that very little light is reflected upwards.
This creates a nice shadow on one side, giving shape and depth to your subject. So it is not a bad idea at all to have your model lie on the ground during your next shoot.
