Sony launches two new mirrorless cameras: the Sony A6600 and Sony A6100. Two new compact and lightweight cameras in the APS-C range.

Specifications

Both cameras feature the following:

- A 24.2-megapixel Exmor CMOS image sensor
- The latest BIONZ-X image processor
- Autofocus time of 0.02 seconds
- 425 contrast-detection autofocus points
- Contrast-detection autofocus covering 84% of the image
- Realtime tracking
- Realtime Eye Autofocus
- Interval shooting for beautiful timelapse videos
- 180-degree tilting LCD touchscreen

The Sony A6600

The Sony A6600 is the successor to the Sony A6500 and comes with a number of major improvements over its predecessor.

The Sony A6600 has a Sony Z battery with long battery life, realtime Eye Autofocus, which we also see in the A7 series, and built-in image stabilisation, making it easy to record videos handheld.

The Sony A6600 also has a microphone and headphone socket, making it possible to record external audio. The Sony A6600 can also record video in 4K and supports S-Log2 and S-Log3 for adjusting the colours afterwards.

The Sony A6100

You can see the Sony A6100 as the perfect entry-level model for beginner photographers. The differences compared to its bigger brothers are minimal. The Sony A6100 has no realtime autofocus during video recording, no headphone socket, ISO up to 51,200, and still uses a Sony W battery.

Like the Sony A6600, the Sony A6100 has improved colour reproduction. Algorithms from full-frame models have been used for this, resulting in natural-looking reproduction, especially for skin tones.

Both cameras are small in size, but have interesting specifications. Thanks to their pocket-sized dimensions and weight, the cameras are well suited to taking on holiday and can also be useful for vloggers.

Although the differences are minimal, Sony has once again managed to launch two new high-end APS-C cameras. In my view, both cameras have been significantly improved and feature technologies that we can also find in the A7 series.

Price and availability

The new Sony A6600 will be available from mid-October for 1,600 euros. The Sony A6100 will also be released in mid-October and will cost 900 euros. An extensive review will follow later, when we have actually been able to test both cameras in practice.
