Sports photography tips from Jean Fruth

"You have to take the photo at the right moment". That is certainly true but for some sports it isn't as difficult as it sounds above. I have been taking photos at Roda JC's home matches for years. I set the camera to burst mode and aperture priority. When I expect an action I press the button and take 11 photos per second, from which I choose the best one. Now, I am an amateur photographer but the pros, from Proshot for example, do it in exactly the same way.
I have also taken photos at a golf tournament. It is less boring than it sounds. I looked for a position around the green with a bunker right in front of me and a background with trees. During a golfer's backswing you are not allowed to take photos because the sound of the camera can cause distraction. Just after the ball has been hit and flies out of the bunker with sand and all, I take my photo. That has produced a number of beautiful photos. The emotion when missing, for example, a putt can also produce a beautiful image. Emotion in sport is always beautiful anyway. I notice that at Roda too, whether they win or lose there is always emotion. As recently during the "pitch invasion" when the supporters thought they had been promoted and heard a minute later that this was not the case. You only have to look carefully to see the emotion.
