Expression can really make a difference

A really quick tip about expression. Expression is everything! You can have your lighting completely sorted and have done some great styling, but if your model looks bored, it all becomes a lot less dynamic. Unless that happens to be the look you are after, of course.

So let your model express herself and have fun. Let her show anger or let her scream, preferably without making any noise... You will see your photo shoot go from zero to hero!
Always push your models during the shoot to find that really cool expression, the look that says: 'wow, this is me!'
I sometimes tell the more 'shy' models that 80 per cent of their expression will be blown away by the flashes, so they really need to push it over the top, and this often helps.
The models will usually react with some surprise when they see genuinely expressive shots. Some will love it, and from that moment on you are on a rollercoaster.

Some will start doubting themselves, so do not ask your model what she thinks of it herself. Just tell her 'Wow, look at this, this is great!'. You will quickly see that this last sentence really does wonders.
When I do my test shoots now, I first try to find out whether the model is expressive. I will take him or her through different expressions and coach them much less than I normally do, as I am a real chatterbox during a shoot.
That is because I know that if they do it well without coaching, they will always do it well.
