Via publisher Van Duuren Media, we received a copy of Frank Doorhof's book Model Photography Handbook, covering everything a photographer needs to know before, during and after the shoot.

Model Photography Handbook, Frank Doorhof

This book is the translation of the international bestseller Mastering the Model Shoot by world-famous fashion lighting photographer and trainer Frank Doorhof. This book was reviewed by Elja some time ago. Frank takes you behind the scenes and unravels all the secrets of a successful model photography workflow.

In this unique book, Frank starts at the beginning: how to find models and attractive locations, how to work with backgrounds and how to work alone or with a team, including a stylist, hair stylist and make-up artist, to create striking photos.

The lighting and light setups that made Frank famous are then discussed in detail, including diagrams and detailed explanations. You learn how Frank lights his photos, and you will be surprised by how simple it can sometimes be to achieve the same effects.

He also covers other important, but often forgotten, matters such as calibrating your monitor, how to use a colour chart and why, and how, you should use a light meter to achieve consistent and reproducible lighting for every photo shoot.

Frank also explains his retouching techniques with step-by-step instructions, and shows you from start to finish how to create various looks. In short, if you are looking for a book that covers every aspect of model photography, look no further.

The author

As he mainly focuses on fashion and glamour photography, you might assume that Frank Doorhof knows almost everything there is to know about model photography.

I first came into contact with Frank through his blogs on Photofacts. I also saw his work during a talk at the Professional Imaging trade show and through his lessons at KelbyOne.

Frank seems like a really nice guy, and I really like the way he teaches. This book about model photography was an almost immediately perfect reading experience.

Conclusion

This book covers everything, and I really mean everything you need to know about photographing models. Finding models and taking a photo. How to get the most out of a location. The importance of clothing and styling.

How to direct and work with your model, as well as aspects such as lighting, post-processing and equipment. Model Photography Handbook covers it all and also offers tips on marketing and what to consider when starting and running a photography business.

The book is a very ambitious attempt to provide a complete guide to model photography, and in my opinion it does so in a good and balanced way.

Frank's stunning images form the basis of Mastering the Model Shoot. This book is not just about his images, though. They naturally serve as fine examples of the subjects being discussed, but Frank offers much more than images to make a point clear.

Model Photography Handbook, Frank Doorhof

Frank is genuinely able to describe and explain a concept in writing. His teaching skills are very clear to me when reading this book, and that makes all the difference.

Alongside the educational aspects, there is so much creativity to see in this book, and it is very difficult not to become inspired while reading it. This combination makes the overall impression of the book very good.

This book is highly recommended for anyone even slightly interested in model photography. It is one of the best books I have ever read when it comes to photography education literature.

Frank Doorhof has done a fantastic job of passing on all his knowledge to the reader in an easy and understandable way. It is an enjoyable read! So if you are interested in photographing models, or if you want good tips on photographing people in general, this book is definitely for you.

Price and where to buy?

Van Duuren Media offers its readers a nice service. You can register the book, and in addition to the web version of the book, you will receive some extra content.

The book normally costs 41.99 euros, but it is temporarily available for just 35.99 euros, until 30 April.

The book is a nice little thing to have. It is definitely not suitable for a beginner. If you have your own studio but still too little experience, then it is fun. Not recommended for a real pro.
