Review: Personal Branding for Photographers

As a photographer, you need to be very good to earn money from photography. How you present yourself in the market may well be the most important thing. With his book Personal Branding for Photographers, portrait photographer Maurice Jager focuses exactly on this.

It is, of course, a book about personal branding, so Maurice himself is also clearly present throughout the book. As a change of pace, he has also interviewed 10 leading photographers. A nice break and a great addition.
So you will not only find Maurice's story, but also get plenty of useful tips from people including Peter Hurley, John Demato, Glyn Dewis and Humberto Tan.
In this book, Maurice explains why you can no longer do without branding as a photographer, and mainly gives you a step-by-step plan for presenting yourself.
In this step-by-step plan, you look for your story and how you can share it to give others an idea of who you are. How do you then turn these ideas into concrete content, and which platforms should you use to share your story?
The chapters
The book is divided into these chapters:
- Introduction to Maurice Jager
- The importance of the photo online
- Introduction to storytelling online
- Setting priorities
- Your image on social media
- My posts on social media
- Getting started with your blog
- Create your photo library
- Getting started yourself
The book contains 208 pages in total.

Maurice has clearly gained much of his knowledge abroad. Like many books about marketing, this book is packed with English terms. This can be inconvenient if you are not yet familiar with these terms.
I had no problems with this myself. Most terms are explained anyway, or you can at least work out what they mean from the context.
Maurice provides practical tools to get started with. For example, his 'six ingredients' for creating a story. He also gives examples of what not to do and what to do. That makes it nice and clear and concrete.
Conclusion
The book Personal Branding for Photographers is not for everyone. Most hobby photographers will not be concerned with this subject.
If you are working as a professional photographer, or want to, this book contains many useful tips for presenting yourself as a brand.
I very much agree with Maurice's story in that respect. As a photographer, you need to specialise and present yourself as a person with a story. In my view, this ties in closely with my article from a few weeks ago about why you do not earn money from your photography.
