Russian artist Helga Stentzel creates playful photographs of everyday things we all have in and around the house. She owes part of her success to social media such as Instagram, where she currently has more than 150,000 followers.

Helga Stentzel studied at Saint Martin's art school in London, where she currently lives. She started her career as an art consultant in the advertising industry. In that world, she learned the basics of branding, marketing and strategy.

It was this basic knowledge, combined with her creativity, that has made her so successful on social media. One of her recent ideas was to make farm animals from the washing hanging on a washing line.

She told Soundsnap how she uses a sketchbook in which she writes down all her ideas. She calls her sketchbook a small treasure chest, in which some ideas take shape very quickly, while others need a lot of time to mature.
Stentzel regularly returns to her ideas until they are good enough to be captured with the camera. She then thinks about the details, so she always goes out to take photographs with a well-formed concept.

Stentzel calls her work Household Surrealism. The origins of her ideas can be traced back to her childhood in Siberia. There, she found all sorts of things in her grandmother's house to fantasise about. She is developing the recent idea of animals on a washing line in Russia.
