Stephan Vanfleteren - In the Shade of the Palm

Commissioned by the French newspaper Le Monde, Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren (1969) photographed filmmakers and actors at the Cannes Film Festival. I saw the photo series during the Fotofestival in Naarden. This article offers an impression of this beautiful series.

Every year in May, the film industry gathers here to attend worldwide film premieres and the awarding of the Palme d'Or. Armies of photographers capture the international stars on the red carpet.

Stephan Vanfleteren chose the shadow of the palm, as the conditions for the photo sessions in the hotels along the Croisette were far from ideal. Little time, poor light, stressed press attachés, appointments running over and impatient colleagues.

Bert Speelman wrote on Tuesday 16 July 2019 at 13:36 | replyI would have liked to go and see it in Naarden, but see that it has already passed. Good news for those who love Stephan's work: the FOMU photography museum in Antwerp is starting a major retrospective exhibition this autumn (25.10.2019 - 01.03.2020). So off to Antwerp. Now let's hope that his portrait book gets a reprint, the previous edition is now being sold for 300 euros.

@Herry: those photos by Ernst Coppejans are indeed also silencing and impressive examples. I had already seen them earlier during the Zilveren Camera expo in Hilversum.
