The first part of the final of The Perfect Picture was broadcast tonight. As in the other episodes, two shoots had to be completed. The first assignment was a split-level photo of kite surfers, and the second was Culinary Bonaire.
The three remaining contestants, Patrick, Georgina and Frits, were allowed to travel to Bonaire for the final. It is called the final, but since someone is still eliminated, you could also see it as a semi-final.
Split-level kite surfing
The first assignment on beautiful Bonaire was to make a split-level kite surfing photo. Split-level means taking a photo half underwater and half above the water.
This time, the celebrities used a different camera than usual, namely the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV fitted with an EF 16-35mm f/4 ultrawide lens. They had some vague reason for this, but I think the main reason was that they had suitable underwater housings for it.
The large dome on the underwater housing made it possible to take a split-level photo. The only thing the contestants still had to do was place this dome partly in the water.
Would you like to take a split-level photo yourself, but on a budget? With the help of a fishbowl, you can get a long way.
Photographer Noustha Koeckhoven was the guest judge for this shoot. She now lives on Bonaire, so she was actually there to help the contestants.

Patrick was the winner of this shoot. Rightly so in my view, although all the photos were a little disappointing. The real wow shot was missing.

Culinary Bonaire
The second assignment was to take a photo of a local place to eat. Each contestant had to photograph a different restaurant, and the assignment was that food had to be visible, the chef also had to be in the photo, and it had to be a diptych.
The idea was also that, when seen in a magazine, the diptych would make you want to actually eat there.
For this shoot, the contestants used the Canon EOS R6 fitted with an RF 24-105 f/4 or the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L.
A good combination of a good full-frame mirrorless camera and two lenses that allow you to photograph pretty much anything. Perfect for this kind of documentary work too.

Frits won this assignment convincingly. He created a good diptych in which he presented the food truck in an appealing way. In fact, neither Patrick's nor Georgina's diptych was really worthy of a place in the final.

Eliminated
Georgina had to leave the show this week. This had actually already become clear during the shoot. Georgina scored very poorly in both assignments this week. A shame, as she had done so well up to this point.
Next week
Next week we will see part 2 of the final, in which the two remaining finalists compete to become the winner of The Perfect Picture 2021.
