Olympus is selling its camera division to Japan Industrial Partners, an investment firm. Olympus's Imaging division has been making a loss for years, and they now hope this division can operate more efficiently as an independent company.

As an independent company, Olympus's camera division will operate under the ownership of Japan Industrial Partners. The transition will be completed on 30 September. According to Olympus, the reason is the extremely difficult market conditions for digital cameras. This is caused by the arrival of smartphones with good cameras on board.

Japan Industrial Partners had already cut costs through reorganisations and focused on the market for cameras with interchangeable lenses. They hoped to increase revenue and turn things around. But this did not have the desired effect, and Olympus continued to make losses.

They now hope that Olympus can grow in the camera market again as a compact, efficient, flexible and independently operating company. In 1936, they produced their first camera with a Zuiko lens. The company was founded back in 1919, when it produced microscopes and thermometers.

And it was only from 2012 that they focused on producing mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses, or MILCs. They also make many optical instruments for the industrial market, laboratories and healthcare.

Olympus cameras have always been heavily underestimated. My wife has an OMD1 MkII and takes great photos with it. At the time she chose an Olympus camera because of its small size and weight.
The Olympus lenses are also not inferior to those of major brands.
Hopefully they will now get a second wind and be appreciated at their true value.
