Ahead of Photokina, Fujifilm also announced its latest camera yesterday, the Fujifilm X-T3. A new model of Fujifilm's popular mirrorless camera, with plenty of improvements.

Fujifilm X-T3

Fujifilm X-T3 specifications

- 26.1-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor
- Sensitivity: 80 - 51,200 ISO (native: 160 - 12,800 ISO)
- Phase-detection autofocus across the entire sensor (2.16 million detection pixels, down to - 3 EV)
- New X-Processor 4 (3 times faster than its predecessor)
- 11 frames per second with the mechanical shutter
- 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter (30 fps at a 1.25x crop)
- 4K video at 60 frames per second
- 0.5-inch electronic viewfinder (3.69 million dots)
- 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen (1.04 million dots)

In terms of resolution, the camera does not improve very much over the X-T2, but there are plenty of other improvements. The sensor is now back-side illuminated, allowing it to be read out faster.

This is where much of the improvement in speed comes from, both for video and photography. The faster X-Processor 4 is also important here.

The autofocus should also have improved considerably. There are now 425 autofocus points to choose from across the entire image. These points use the 2.16 million phase-detection pixels to focus quickly.

What is missing compared to the Fujifilm X-H1 is built-in image stabilisation. That would have been an important addition for videographers.

Price and availability

The Fujifilm X-T3 should already be in shops from 20 September and will cost around 1,500 euros.

I myself have been photographing with Fuji mirrorless cameras for a number of years now, and I am quite surprised by the introduction to this article: "This time, Fujifilm has not cut corners on improvements". To be honest, I don't quite understand this comment, because as far as I know Fuji rarely cuts corners when it comes to improvements! They usually make quite an effort to keep upgrading cameras and lenses as well, even if a particular model has already been on the market for some time. And it is really not just about 'bug fixing', but also genuine improvements to, for example, autofocus, and the addition of extra functions. I personally really like the fact that a company like Fuji genuinely pays attention to the customer, even AFTER the product has been sold. And as far as releasing new models is concerned: as far as I know, Fuji's new camera models are generally always improved compared to the previous model. Of course, every camera brand has its own strengths and weaknesses, and that also applies to Fuji, but when it comes to improvements, I think they actually do quite well compared to other brands...
