Insta360 has announced the Insta360 X6. The new 360-degree camera films all around, but can also be used as a regular action camera. Insta360 is essentially trying to fit two cameras into one compact body.

I've been using an Insta360 GO 3 for a while now, and I'm very enthusiastic about it. The small size in particular makes it easy to take the camera with you and use it in places where you would be less likely to film with a regular camera.
The X6 is of course a completely different type of camera, but offers the same creative freedom in a different way: when filming a 360° recording, you don't actually have to decide yet exactly where your camera is looking.
Film first, choose your composition later
That remains one of the most interesting features of a 360-degree camera, in my view. The X6 captures everything around the camera. You only decide which part of the image to use during editing.
This means that afterwards, for example, you can have the camera look at yourself, then turn it towards someone next to you and afterwards show the landscape. All from the same recording.

The Insta360 X6 can do this at up to 8K 50 fps. You can also choose 6K at up to 60 fps and 4K at up to 100 fps. The maximum bitrate is 240 Mbps with H.265 compression.
It's worth bearing in mind that the 8K is spread across the entire 360-degree image. When you later take a regular crop from it, you therefore don't end up with 8K video. The extra resolution mainly gives you more room to create a good crop afterwards.

What's interesting is that you don't necessarily have to use the X6 as a 360-degree camera. In Flat Mode, it works more like a traditional action camera. You choose your viewing direction beforehand and can then film at up to 5K 60 fps.
For slow motion, the camera can record 4K at up to 120 fps in this mode. With 360° video, 4K 100 fps is possible, and in the special Bullet Time mode, even 4K 240 fps.
There is also a new InstaFrame 2.0 mode. In this mode, the camera immediately creates a flat video with camera movements and tracking, while the complete 360° recording is saved at the same time. You therefore have usable footage straight away, but can still return to the original later to create a different crop.

Larger sensors
The X6 has two 1/1.1-inch sensors and a Triple AIChip system. This should produce better images, especially in low light. Insta360's PureVideo mode is also available for this. Auto PureVideo can switch this mode on automatically when the lighting conditions deteriorate.
Of course, you can also take photos with the camera. A full 360° photo can have a resolution of up to 120 megapixels. That sounds quite useful for 360-degree photos. I'm curious to see what the quality is like in practice.
In Flat Mode, the X6 can take photos of up to 42 megapixels. Obviously, don't expect the quality you're used to from your system camera or DSLR.
64 GB memory and replaceable lenses
A useful practical addition is the built-in memory. The X6 has 64 GB of storage, of which around 47 GB is available for your own recordings. You can also simply use a microSD memory card.
It's also handy that the lenses can be replaced by the user. That's no unnecessary luxury on a 360-degree camera: the lenses stick out quite a long way and are therefore rather vulnerable when you use the camera during action.
The X6 is also waterproof to 20 metres without an additional housing. The camera has Wi-Fi 6, USB 3.0, a 2.32-inch OLED touchscreen and a battery with a capacity of 2,600 mAh.

Flexible action camera
The Insta360 X6 seems particularly interesting because you don't have to choose between a 360-degree camera and a traditional action camera beforehand. If you want maximum freedom, record everything around you and choose the camera angle afterwards. If you simply want usable footage quickly, put it in Flat Mode.
I like using my Insta360 GO 3 because it lets you easily create video footage that you probably wouldn't make with a regular camera. A 360-degree camera is even more flexible, because you can still change the camera angle afterwards.
Price and availability
The Insta360 X6 Standard Bundle has a recommended retail price of 699 euros. For 799 euros, there is an Essentials Bundle with an extra battery and 114-centimetre Invisible Selfie Stick, among other things. A Motorcycle Bundle costs 849 euros. The camera is available in Midnight Black and Arctic White.
