The 70-200mm is one of the most-used lenses for many photographers. This week, Nikon announced the second version of its 70-200mm f/2.8 for the Nikon Z system.
One important advantage is the lower weight. Without the tripod collar, the lens weighs 998 grams. This makes it 362 grams lighter than its predecessor. The lens has also become 12mm shorter.
The lens has built-in image stabilisation of up to 6 stops, with support for Synchro VR when used with compatible Z cameras. The autofocus system has been updated with so-called Silky Swift voice coil motors and should work faster and more quietly than the first generation.
The minimum focusing distance is 0.38 metres at 70mm and 0.8 metres at 200mm. The maximum magnification is 0.3x. The lens has a rounded aperture with 11 blades and extensive weather sealing.
New features include a detachable tripod collar with an Arca-Swiss connection and a click-stop control ring. The internal zoom construction keeps the centre of gravity the same while zooming, which is particularly interesting for video recording.

The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II will cost 3,349 euros and should be available from next month.
