Tamron has announced an all-in-one zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. With a range of 18-300mm, you essentially no longer need another lens.

This lens will be available for Sony E-mount from 24 September. Later this year, the lens will also become available for Fujifilm X-mount.

The Tamron 18-300mm f/3,5-6,3 Di III-AVC VXD (Model B061) has a total zoom range of 16.6x, giving you enough range for most situations. The angle of view of this lens is equivalent to approximately 27mm to 450mm on a full-frame camera.

Tamron says that focusing is quiet and fast thanks to the Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive. Special lens elements provide high resolving power from edge to edge to ensure the best possible quality. Tamron claims that the 18-300mm is the best all-in-one zoom lens available today.

The minimum focusing distance of this new lens is just 15cm at the 18mm setting, giving a magnification of 1:2.

Tamron has also built in its Vibration Compensation mechanism, reducing the chance of camera shake when using the extremely narrow angle of view at 300mm on the APS-C sensor.

The Tamron 18-300mm has the same filter diameter as the other Tamron lenses for APS-C mirrorless cameras. This means you do not need to buy multiple filters if you use them.

The Tamron 18-300mm for Sony E-mount will be available from 24 September for 750 euros. If you need the Fujifilm X-mount, you will have to wait a little longer, but Tamron promises that it will be available before the end of the year.

I’m looking forward to it and hope the quality is also fully up to scratch. I’ve become so used to the convenience of the (excellent) 24-600 mm zoom lens on my Sony RX10MIV that when going for a walk or during holidays, the choice almost always ends up favoring the Sony. As a result, my Fujifilm cameras often remain unused. It’s not F2.4 to F4.0 like the Sony, but the APS-C sensor should compensate for a lot. I’m curious!

I would never in my life buy a zoom with a zoom range of more than 5x. Inevitably, you will have to deal with softness at the extreme ends of such a lens. From 18 to 300mm is a zoom range of almost 20x. So I don't understand professional photographers recommending such a lens. I then wonder: What's behind that? Every serious professional and amateur photographer knows that with a zoom range of more than 4x, you significantly sacrifice quality.
If it's just ordinary standard 'holiday snaps', then go ahead.
