During a shoot today, I noticed that my trusty Apollo Orb softbox really needs replacing. Perhaps it's time to update my entire Strobist kit. I usually make the gear suggestions, but which set would you recommend for me?

My current set consists of wireless Yongnuo/Canon RX flashes. I usually attach a softbox to them. I have two from Westcott. I'm actually quite happy with this kit. But I think things can be even better these days.

What am I looking for? Flashes, a trigger and light modifiers. The trigger needs to work with different camera brands. After all, I do sometimes test various brands. And I also need to be able to adjust the flashes from the trigger.

The flashes need to be compact. I don't want to lug around studio-sized equipment. At the moment, I just use reportage/on-camera flashes. Nice and easy to take with me. In terms of light, it's useful if they have some power, but they also need to be able to cope with low power settings.

Two softboxes would probably be fine. An octa and a strip, for example. With a matching grid. Everything needs to be compact to carry, of course, and it shouldn't cost the earth.

I have some ideas, of course, but I'd particularly like to hear what you use or would recommend. Perhaps you know of something else that I really ought to have in my kit. Let me know in the comments!

To answer my own question by already providing an option; the Godox Witstro AD100 Pro could be a good candidate.

These are compact, powerful flashes. Something more powerful than an on-camera flash, but even somewhat more compact. The magnetic head is handy for small accessories, such as color filters or a grid.

The price, at around 350 euros per flash, is reasonable. There are cheaper on-camera flashes to be found, but for the price it is not bad at all.

The new Godox X3 trigger is nicely compact and modern, but not suitable for use on multiple cameras. For that, I think I need the Xpro II trigger.

As for softboxes, there is plenty available that fits this flash. I haven't really looked into this yet.

This is one option. Do you perhaps have another brand that I should definitely take a look at as well?

Godox triggers are camera brand specific. x3s/n/c/o/l/f the same applies to the Xpro II, that one is also available per brand.

I also opt for Godox. I have triggers for Fuji and another brand. But together with a few TT350s I can use Sony, Fuji, Nikon and Panasonic/Olympus.
Besides a few speedlights, I use two AD200 Pro flashes.
And a number of modifiers from snoot to 100cm.
