Video: Combining Flash with Candlelight

Candlelight creates atmospheric light for portrait photos. But flash is often better if you want to take really great photos. So what happens if you combine the two? Gavin Hoey shows you how in this video.
Gavin first sets his camera to the exposure needed for the background. So without flash. Only the candles provide light, leaving the model in darkness. He keeps using this exposure after adding the flash.
He places the flash very close to the model, so little of the flash reaches the background. This preserves the atmosphere created by the candles in the background.
Using an orange colour filter, he makes sure that the colour temperatures of both light sources, the candles and the flash, match.
Gavin also takes the photo again without the model. This gives him a photo with just the background. He can then easily remove the softbox, which was in the shot. Of course, you need to work with a tripod for this.

Interesting. Does anyone know which screen he uses when tethering his photos?
