You often place a flash close to your model. After all, that is the subject you want to light. But it can also be great fun to place a flash outside the room where you are taking photos. You can then fire the flash through a window or doorway.
The effect this gives your photo is as if natural light is coming in. Handy on a cloudy day if you still want to create the effect of sunshine. It can also add a lot of atmosphere, with beautiful light falling in just the right place.
You can use the incoming light as the main light, but of course you can also combine it with flashes that are positioned indoors.
