Giving photography workshops and courses is not really possible for us at the moment, especially without the associated events, but it does give my wife and me the opportunity to write more articles. It feels a little strange, though, because of course we would rather not have found ourselves in this situation.
But if we have to spend more time indoors, or sometimes in the garden as in our case, we might as well read books to brush up our knowledge. Or write a review about one.

I recently got in touch with Rob de Winter, a Photoshop expert and Adobe Certified Instructor who has written his first book. As well as being an author, Rob is a teacher, designer, photographer and musician. An ideal combination for passing on knowledge, I think.
The target audience for this book is the somewhat more experienced Photoshop user. But people with less experience can also follow the tutorials easily and be inspired to get started.
Book details
Soft cover: 272 pages
Publisher: van Duuren Media
ISBN: 9789463561549
Size: 21 x 24 cm
First impression
My first impression of Rob's book is excellent. It looks well produced and has a beautifully styled cover and contents, designed by Rob himself, of course. As we have come to expect from Van Duuren Media, the paper quality is excellent too, which makes the book pleasant to hold.
The typeface, font size and use of colour are all good, making the book pleasant to read in that respect as well. The book has clearly been made with care, as shown by the acknowledgements alone.
What makes this book especially interesting is that it can serve both as a textbook and as a source of inspiration. Rob interviewed six internationally renowned Photoshop artists for the book. They each tell their story and show some of their work.
The structure of the book is very logical, so you have something to guide you and can easily find your way around. Rob's writing style is pleasant and has a comfortable rhythm. His experience as a teacher and musician is clearly noticeable.

Contents
Chapter 1 briefly describes the fundamentals of Photoshop. This includes the interface and its settings, what (adjustment) layers and masks are and how to use them, as well as working with brushes. This gives everyone the same starting point in terms of knowledge, which I personally find useful.
Chapters 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 contain interviews with Photoshop gurus such as Erik Johansson, Temi Coker, Lisa Carney, Sammy Slabbinck, Set Vexy and Felix Hernandez. They talk about their working methods, their favourite Photoshop tools and where they get their inspiration. More personal topics are also discussed.
With these interviews, Rob is essentially giving us a look inside their Photoshop kitchens. And who doesn't enjoy learning from the best in the business and getting to know the person behind the work as well?
Interesting statements from these interviews that I can agree with 100 per cent include:
• Lisa Carney: Give up the expectation of becoming very good very quickly
• Sammy Slabbinck: Just mess around. You need to do that to get to grips with the programme

In my view, Chapter 3 covers one of the most important aspects, including in Photoshop, namely that a good composition is the basis of every Photoshop project. As a photographer, I can only agree. How do you make sure that your Photoshop composition, which usually consists of several images, ultimately produces a beautiful result?
Using an example, Rob shows how things such as cutting out objects, colour matching, mask adjustments and White Balance adjustment layers help create a well-coordinated whole.
In Chapter 5, he shows, through an experiment, how to create a poster in the style of Temi Coker. Temi designed a poster every day for years and shared it online, which gave him a great deal of Photoshop experience. So here too, the rule is: practise, practise and practise again.
A nice addition is the section “Drawing on your iPad”, in which you can use the Adobe Fresco app and paint brushes to create creative results.
Chapter 7 covers the retouching technique “Frequency Separation”. This technique is often used when retouching faces. For example, you can use it to quickly remove blemishes from skin.
Chapter 9 deals with applying the right colours and colour corrections, and subtly adding shadows to create depth. A particularly enjoyable part is using atmospheric brushes to add mist, dust and clouds to your images. Here we work with what are known as “Channels”.
You can download the atmospheric brushes from the Adobe website, but of course you can also make them yourself.
In Chapter 11, you learn to work with “Blending Modes”. With this technique, you can add things such as fire, paper, light or other textures.
You also get started with dodging and burning. Finally, the last chapter focuses on a fun way to share your work. In this case, Rob uses a photo collage.

Conclusion
Hopefully, this review gives you a good impression of the book Photoshop Masters. The title certainly lives up to its name. The author of this book and the people interviewed are all true masters of their craft.
A book that is more than worth the purchase price of 45 euros and will be very well received by the Photoshop community.
So if you want to gain more knowledge of working with Photoshop, especially as a photographer, and create beautiful images, this book certainly won't disappoint you. It has inspired me, at least, and I will be getting started with it myself.

Translated from Dutch.
I find it rather superficial and there is a lot that is not covered. For the beginner who wants to learn everything and all the possibilities and wants a reference book, there is not much to be gained here.
I myself am very skilled with Ps and couldn't learn anything new from it. I did enjoy reading about the artists, who, however, don't reveal everything either. -

It reads very pleasantly and smoothly. After the conversations with the Photoshop Masters, there is always a tutorial that ties in with them. This challenges you to start designing yourself.

I’m looking forward to Rob’s next book. Given the evolution of Adobe’s products (on iPad, etc.), he’ll still be able to fill many more books.
