I travelled to the French department of Tarn with a group of enthusiastic photographers. Although it was autumn, we had summer-like conditions. In this article, I want to show you some images of the bastide villages this area is known for.

The masterclass I teach there is not limited to landscape photography. Although this is certainly covered, it goes beyond that. Visiting several bastide villages is also part of it.

The best-known bastide village in Tarn: Cordes-sur-Ciel.
The great thing about these villages is their authenticity. Although you can certainly find modern things there, they still have an old, original appearance. Photographing lonely, deserted streets is a fantastic activity.

For this type of photography, black and white is a great choice. Especially in sunlight on cloudless days, it creates a fantastic interplay of light and dark. I talk more about this in my black and white photography course on Photofacts Academy.

In this article, I want to show you a number of photos of these bastide villages in Tarn. In black and white, of course. They were all taken with nothing more than a Canon EOS R5 and an RF24-105mm lens. In some cases, I used a polarising filter.

The photos were taken in raw, with a black and white preset set on the camera. This allowed me to get an idea of what the result would look like while I was there. The final edits were made in Lightroom Classic.

All photos were taken during the October 2023 masterclass in the villages of Puycelcli, Penne, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, and Castelnau-de-Montrimal.

I have been to that area together with my wife. Really worth it and extremely photogenic. Unfortunately, due to my limited mobility, I cannot participate in your masterclass. I would feel like a burden to you and the other participants.
I will go back there again with my wife to take photographs at my own pace.
