I asked the members of Photofacts Academy to send in their best snow photos. Snow in the Netherlands is quite a unique sight these days, so it deserves some attention. Just like our members.
Every year, I photograph snowy landscapes. I do that in Lofoten, Norway. In the Netherlands, the chance of snow is almost infinitely smaller. If you want snow, you have to go to the Belgian Ardennes, because the chances are higher there.
But 2026 started with a white blanket covering the Netherlands. Not just one morning with a centimetre of snow that has disappeared again by the afternoon. But a proper layer of snow that stayed for more than a week. Fantastic, isn't it?
For society, it seems to be a nuisance, judging by the complaints from the people around me. But what does it matter to take things a little more slowly and be a bit more careful for one week? To those people I say: enjoy it instead of complaining.
For photographers, it is a real treat. It offers the chance to capture images that are now unique in the Netherlands. That is why I asked the members of Photofacts Academy to send in photos. One image per person. The number of entries was enormous, so thank you for that.

Snow is white, but white reflects the colors around you. That means snow in practice isn't white. It takes on the tint of its surroundings. Lots of blue certainly occurs, but also warm colors, depending on the time of day.
