Tonight was the semi-final of The Perfect Picture. The three remaining Dutch celebrities took on two more assignments. For the first, they had to take three documentary photographs of a night worker. The second shoot was a Trash the Dress shoot.

Night workers

For the first assignment, they had to create a triptych of someone who works through the night. The photographs had to tell a story. Quite a tough assignment, in my view. Creating a good triptych is not easy.

The contestants got to work with the Canon EOS RP and either a 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS or the 24-105mm f/4 L lens.

Personally, I thought Daphne's photographs were very successful, although there was something to the jury's point that all her photographs essentially told the same story. A cleaner at work three times.

Jamie was the winner, with the photograph in the lift proving especially popular. I think the moment was captured well too, because things got hectic in the lift video, while the photograph radiates calm.

According to the jury, the second photograph was a bit of a 'standard picture', but in my view it is a very good image that clearly shows what the report is about. The last photograph was, ironically enough, I think the image that was taken first of the three. But then, what the jury doesn't know...

Trash the Dress

A very enjoyable assignment, this Trash the Dress shoot. I have also thrown a model into the water wearing a wedding dress once. It can really produce beautiful images.

Unfortunately, the photographs from this shoot were quite disappointing. Creativity seemed to be largely absent, and little attention was paid to detail.

The guest judge and expert was wedding photographer Ashvin Ghisyawan. He gave the contestants quite a few practical tips, which they promptly did not seem to follow.

For this shoot, the photographers worked with the Canon EOS 6D mark II and the 24-70mm f/2.8 L II lens.

It was a real shame that Daphne had not chosen a good composition for her photograph. There were far too many unnecessary things in the frame, while more important things were just outside it.

Jamie had quite a nice photograph, but he chose a poor background. With a better, or more blurred, background, he would have scored higher.

Home assignment

This week's home assignment is to create a documentary image in which people and the evening are central. In the video below, from the Canon YouTube channel, you will get tips for this.

Next week

Next week, the two finalists will head to the Middle East for the final. It has not yet been announced which shoots they will have to do there.
