Last night saw the second episode of the fourth season of Het Perfecte Plaatje. The contestants had to create a ‘Summer in the Netherlands’ photo and take part in the traditional nude shoot.

Summer in the Netherlands

The first assignment was pretty tough straight away. The contestants not only had to capture a summer scene, the photo also had to contain a recognisably Dutch touch and include humour. And they had to do it all within 45 minutes.

Photographer Marieke van der Velden was the expert during this shoot. She gave them a number of tips beforehand and also helped with the judging.

The location was the beach, or the promenade, at Noordwijk, and the contestants got to work with the Canon EOS M50 mirrorless camera.

Kees won this assignment with his photo of the two older bathers. It did indeed fit well with the documentary style they were looking for. Personally, I preferred Frouke’s photo, with the young woman being watched by three boys.

Nude

Every year in the second episode, while all the contestants are still in the competition, it is time for the nude shoot. Each contestant was given one or more naked mannequins to photograph, along with one or more naked models.

The expert who came to help the celebrities was photographer Barend Houtsmuller. I think he partly helped the photographers set up their lighting. At least, we did not see this, but we also did not really see the celebrities working on it themselves.

The photos were taken with a Canon EOS RP mirrorless camera. The contestants could choose their own lens, with Barend specifically advising them to use a 50mm prime.

Daphne won this round with her photo of the model with three mannequins.

I personally had Christina’s photo as my favourite. Beautiful light, a lovely background and a fun concept with the model taking a nude selfie of herself with the mannequin.

I also thought Helga’s photo was well made. She had a difficult model to photograph, but she managed to capture the portly man skilfully and with tenderness, as the assignment required. In my view, Barend was right to point out that the light could have been better here.

At-home assignment

This week’s photo assignment is to create a seasonal photo, a photo focusing on Dutch people and one of the four seasons. The video below, from the Canon YouTube channel, contains a number of tips from William Rutten and guest judge Marieke van der Velden. Submit your photo here (by next Sunday).

Next week

Next week, the celebrities will create self-portraits in the style of Rembrandt van Rijn and take unusual animal portraits from below.

John Kraaijkamp Jr. had to leave the programme. His photos were indeed less successful, and he also finished last the previous week.
