Last Sunday, I photographed mushrooms with the camera club at the Posbank. I came across a very special mushroom, one where the gnomes had apparently forgotten to turn the light off.

The mushroom was of course already beautiful in the forest like this, but I thought it would be fun to add some light to it.

I was photographing in the middle of the day, but at f/14 and 100 ISO it is easy to underexpose the ambient light a little. This gives the photo a bit of an early evening feel.

Underexposed mushroom

I had my camera on my tripod, or actually hanging upside down underneath it, which lets you get nice and close to the ground. This makes it very easy to take two photos from the same position and combine them later in Photoshop.

In the second photo, I lit the mushroom from above with my phone's light. I held an orange filter (CTO) in front of the light to make it a little warmer.

I then placed the two photos in a single Photoshop file, as two layers. Photoshop can align them automatically to correct small differences. Select both layers and choose Edit -> Auto-Align Layers.

Then add a layer mask and paint the lit mushroom back into the other photo. As the cap was quite badly overexposed, I painted there with 20% opacity.

I also made some basic adjustments in Lightroom, adding more contrast by increasing the blacks, adding a little extra vibrance and adding a vignette.

Final result: a glowing mushroom
