A Google research team has used artificial intelligence to create 3D models of famous locations from random photos taken by tourists.
Thousands of photos of a subject are combined to create a 3D image. This lets you view the building in question from all sides and in all sorts of different lighting conditions.
The technique used for this is called NeRF, which stands for Neural Radiance Fields. The technique has been around for some time, but the researchers have now improved it so that it can handle different lighting conditions much better.
The technique is actually quite similar in principle to Microsoft's PhotoSynth technique. They were already very active with this 13 years ago.
