Photographing in a trendy city!

City photography is great fun and very varied. What can't you photograph in a city?! A large city is perfect for street photography, for example, but also for capturing beautiful shop windows, cosy alleyways or stunning buildings.
Food and drink are never far away, and in 'bad' weather you can quickly find somewhere to go inside.
There is no shortage of fun, trendy cities in our country. Depending on your preference, you can focus on a particular part of a city. If you travel by train, the station is often a great place to start. This time, I chose Strijp-S, an urban hotspot in Eindhoven.

This neighbourhood breathes the history of Philips. On this former industrial site, the Philips complex, the old factories and halls have slowly been transformed into a paradise for culture lovers and creative people since 2004.
Most of the buildings are still authentic and are perfect for architectural photography. You will find old steel bridges and staircases, as well as murals. Leidingstraat forms the heart of Strijp-S and is an interesting place to begin your exploration.

There are lots of photos online to give you a first impression, so you roughly know what to expect. You can try to recreate these images or put your own spin on them.
Taking spontaneous portraits is also an option. If you ask politely, people will probably be happy to pose for you. Fortunately, this beautiful woman was happy to pose for me for a moment.

Keep in mind that the type of weather affects the atmosphere in your photos. Bright sunshine quickly creates harsh shadows. In black and white photography, this can be very effective because it gives you more contrast in your photos.
My photo day literally got rained off. It was still great fun photographing reflections in puddles, but if it keeps raining, it is better to go inside somewhere to take photos.
I took a tripod and a lensball with me for my photo day. A tripod to frame my composition properly and to make multiple exposures.
My glass ball, or lensball, was for experimenting with surreal images. I like reflections and often look out for reflections in shop windows. I often find the images more surprising as a result.

What do you usually take with you on a city trip? You generally want to travel light and have your camera ready quickly.
For this type of photography, I bought a small, sporty camera backpack that can hold a bottle of water, a small tripod and a rain jacket in addition to my camera gear. Most of the time, I either wear the camera around my neck or have it on a tripod.

I think the Lowepro Flipside BP 350 AW is a very nice and comfortable backpack. I would rather choose which lenses to take than carry such a huge, heavy backpack around.
I also bought a smaller tripod, the Rollei CT-5C. Both work well and are certainly useful in the city.
