You don't need a large studio, spectacular location or complicated editing for an impressive cinematic portrait. In this video, photographer Gavin Hoey shows how he creates an atmospheric cyberpunk portrait in his small home studio.
Gavin uses three flashguns, some colour filters and a clear plastic bag.
The idea is to create a scene in which model Chloe is in a futuristic city. Instead of rebuilding an entire city, Gavin chooses a different perspective: we look inside through a window from the outside.
By applying water droplets to a transparent sheet, he creates the suggestion of a rainy window. A little glycerine makes the droplets larger and helps them stay in place.
The best trick comes at the end. Gavin makes a hole in a clear plastic bag and attaches it in front of his lens. This keeps the centre of the image sharp, while the edges get a soft, dreamy glow.
A fun idea to try out in your own home studio.
