Portrait photography tip: Photographing through something

Usually, you try to make sure there is nothing in the way when you take a photo. For a creative image, you can also deliberately hold something in front of your lens. For example, a flower, some leaves or a brightly coloured piece of fabric.
Make sure you do not cover your entire image, but only part of it. Also make sure that at least your subject's eyes are still visible.
This technique works best with a large aperture opening, or a small aperture number, so that whatever you hold in front of your lens appears out of focus. This creates a blurry haze over part of your photo.
This technique works very well for creating a cheerful or romantic atmosphere in your photo. In the photo above, I photographed through the leaves of a bush.
