Portrait photography tip: Take spontaneous portraits

Most of the portrait photos I take are posed. Your subject knows that you are going to take a photo and is ready for it. Try photographing them when they are not aware of it.

People always behave differently when a camera is pointed at them. If someone is busy with something else, you can discreetly take a nice portrait without them realising they are being photographed. This helps you avoid fake smiles or silly gestures towards the camera.
It can help to use a telephoto lens, such as a 70-200mm. This lets you take nice portraits from a little distance without anyone noticing.
These kinds of photos are often fun when you are photographing at a party, for example. While people are telling each other stories, you can capture nice expressions on their faces.
