Godox has announced a new version of its popular V1 flashgun. The new model has received some great upgrades. The most noticeable is the sub-flash, the Godox SU-1, a second flash on the flashgun itself that you can use as a fill flash.
The SU-1 sub-flash can be adjusted from full power down to 1/128th power. You can use this flash as a fill flash when you use the flashgun on your camera, but bounce the main flash off, for example, a wall or ceiling.
You can also use the SU-1 sub-flash to create a catchlight in your subject's eyes. You can of course switch off the SU-1 flash when you are not using it, but you can also remove it completely from your flashgun.
The flashgun itself has been given a new VB30 lithium-ion battery. With this battery, you can now fire as many as 100 consecutive full-power flashes before the flashgun overheats. With the old model, this was around 40 full-power flashes.
It is now also possible to connect an external battery to the flashgun, and the flashgun can be charged via a USB-C connection, which is mandatory in Europe for new products.
The other specifications of the V1 have not been changed. It has a flash power of 76 Ws and supports high-speed sync up to 1/8000s.
I think it is a nice upgrade and an interesting flashgun for anyone already using the Godox system. The sub-flash feels a bit like a gimmick that you will not use much in practice. But perhaps it is actually very useful for things such as that catchlight.
The Godox V1Pro should be available in shops soon and will cost 349 euros. The flashgun will be available in versions for Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, OM System and Panasonic.
