Leica has announced a new Leica Q3 Monochrom camera, and it is available straight away. This version of the Leica Q3 can only take black-and-white photos. A camera for true black-and-white purists.

Leica Q3 Monochrom specifications
- 61-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor (without colour filter)
- 28mm f/1.7 lens
- Electronic viewfinder with 5.76 million dots
- 3-inch touchscreen (1.84 million dots)
- 8K video (30p)
- IP52 dust and water protection
This new Leica is the successor to the Leica Q2 Monochrom, with the advantage of the improved sensor also found in the Q3. What is still missing is phase-detection autofocus, which is included in the colour version of the Q3.

Twelve years ago I wrote a review of the Leica M Monochrom. At the time, I thought it was a nice camera for true black-and-white photographers, with the disadvantage that you would have to start working with colour filters again.
Personally, I think buying the standard colour version and converting to black and white afterwards is the better way to work.
Price and availability
The Leica Q3 Monochrom is available immediately from Leica Stores and Leica dealers. The recommended retail price is 6,750 euros.
