Leica has announced a new mirrorless camera, the Leica SL3-S. This is a new full-frame 24-megapixel camera that looks very similar to the Leica SL3, but is mainly faster. You can shoot up to 30 photos per second.

The speed comes at the expense of resolution. With the more expensive SL3, you shoot photos at 60 megapixels, but only manage 5 photos per second.

Leica SL3-S specifications

- 24-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor (with phase-detection autofocus)
- 30 photos per second
- Electronic viewfinder, OLED with 5.76 million dots
- 3.2-inch tilting display
- 6K video (30p)
- 4K video up to 60p, with APS-C format crop
- Weight: 852 grams- CFexpress Type B and SD(XC) memory card slots

As always with Leica, you pay extra for the name and build quality. If you are looking for a model that is more than 50 per cent cheaper with virtually the same specifications (and the same sensor), the Panasonic S5 II X is worth considering.

Price and availability

The Leica SL3-S is now available in limited quantities from the Leica Store Amsterdam, the Leica Store Lisse and specialist Leica dealers in the Netherlands. The recommended retail price is 5,190 euros.

Leica has traditionally been a camera mainly used by elitists! The real photographers who earn their living with photography therefore use the best-known full-frame Japanese cameras!

In the past, I believe many photojournalists also worked with a Leica M camera. Indestructible.

But you do indeed need to have deep pockets for one.
