The details of Nikon's new DSLR, the D6 have recently been announced. The D6 will be released in April and features a completely redesigned autofocus system with greater accuracy than the D5, but fewer focus points. The full-frame camera also has a 20.8-megapixel sensor.
The new focusing system of the Nikon D6 has a grid of 105 cross-type sensors, all of which can be selected. With the D5, not all 153 focus points could be selected manually. Their density is 1.6 times higher than that of the D5.

The central 15 focus points are so sensitive that you can still focus at f/8. With the central focus point, you can photograph down to a light level of -4.5 EV, and with all the other points down to -4 EV.
The D6 also has an improved subject recognition system, according to Nikon, which improves subject tracking with autofocus.
The sensor in the D6 is combined with a new Expeed 6 image processor, but the resolution remains the same as that of the D5. You can expand the sensor's sensitivity from ISO 100 to 102,400, and then expand it digitally by another five stops to an equivalent of ISO 3.2 million.

With the mirror raised, the D6 shoots at 10.5 frames per second in silent mode. With the mirror lowered, the maximum speed is 14 frames per second. When the mirror is raised, the viewfinder cannot be used, but you can view the image on the live view screen on the back.
In this mirror-raised mode, it is also possible to take photos at 30 or 60 frames per second at resolutions of 8 and 2 megapixels respectively. You can film in 4K resolution with the D6 at up to 30 frames per second.
The D6 has two versatile card slots that accept XQD and CFexpress cards, the fastest cards currently available. There is no longer any support for CompactFlash cards.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS are also built in, and a gigabit Ethernet port is present once again. The camera weighs 1,440 grams. With the D6, Nikon is primarily targeting professional sports photographers.
Price and availability
The camera will be available at the beginning of April for a recommended retail price of 7,299 euros.
