Sony has announced a new macro lens: the Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro G Master OSS. It is the first macro lens in the high-end G Master series. Until now, Sony photographers had to make do with the 90mm f/2.8 G Macro from 2015.
The lens is designed for full-frame E-mount cameras and weighs 710 grams. The design contains 13 elements in 11 groups, including XA glass, extremely aspherical, to minimise distortion and bokeh rings. The aperture has 11 rounded blades.
The maximum magnification is notable: by default, the lens offers 1.4:1 instead of the usual 1:1. This lets you get just a little closer to your subject.
Combined with a 1.4× or 2× teleconverter, this can increase to 2:1 or even 2.8:1 respectively. Values that normally only occur with specialised macro lenses.
Sony uses four XD linear motors for autofocus. According to the brand, the lens works almost twice as fast as the 90mm Macro.
