The Russian photographer Prokudin-Gorsky (1863-1944) devoted his career to promoting colour photography in Russia during its early days.
He was well acquainted with the achievements of his European colleagues at the time, and his photos are striking masterpieces that really stand out.
The camera he used was a variant of the camera made by the German chemist Adolf Miethe, under whom he briefly studied photographic chemistry in Charlottenburg near Berlin.
In Russia, he developed a light-sensitive emulsion that covered the entire colour spectrum. He took his photos in monochrome, but with a filter. Thanks to their exceptionally good colour quality, they looked very natural.
At the time, there was no way to print photos. His glass slides had to be projected using a triple magic lantern. He travelled through Russia between 1905 and 1916 with the support of Tsar Nicholas II.
The photos from his journey through the Asian part of the vast Russian Empire show, among other things, Bukhara and Samarkand, along with the faded glory of the Silk Road. The vast landscapes, fairytale-like buildings and people of Russia, on the eve of the First World War and the October Revolution. Wonderful to see!
