With a camera, you can achieve an incredible amount. From finding inner peace to capturing important moments in life, everything seems possible with a camera in your hand.

More and more people are taking up photography as a hobby. With the arrival of mobile phones and cheaper camera models, it has become very easy to get started.

Would you like to learn how to begin with photography? Would you like to be able to take high-quality creative photos? Read on quickly!

Tip 1 - What do you want to photograph?

The learning process in photography strongly depends on what you want to photograph. That is why, before you can even start with photography, it is very important to decide what you would like to photograph.

What will be the theme and what will be the subject of the type of photography you would like to explore? That is entirely up to you, but it is useful to decide this in advance.

You are probably wondering what types of photography exist. A popular type of photography is landscape photography. Think of the photos in magazines such as National Geographic, but also, for example, the holiday snaps you took yourself in the Pyrenees.

Landscape

This type of photography gives you plenty of room for creativity. The representation of a landscape changes because of the photography choices you make. This type is also easy to combine with other hobbies, such as travelling.

Another type of photography is portrait photography. This could be a simple portrait with a white background, like the one on your passport, but also, for example, portraits of models. This type of photography is ideal if you enjoy working with other people.

Medieval portrait

This type also gives you plenty of room for creativity.

Tip 2 - What do you need?

You need very little to get started with photography. For beginners, I would therefore recommend not investing too much in equipment yet. It is important to master photography first before investing more money.

To begin with, it is important to have a camera. This could be your phone or an old analogue camera. The most important thing is that you can change the settings on the camera. I am talking about the shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings.

Over time, you can expand your equipment with other items that can improve your skills. Think, for example, of a tripod, flash, lights and light stands, backdrops, telephoto lenses, macro lenses, portrait lenses with a low aperture value, wide-angle lenses, lens filters, and so on.

Different lenses can enable you to discover new types of photography and develop your skills further.

Tip 3 - Learn the basics

To get started with photography, it is important to know the basic photography terms and understand how these aspects affect your photos.

Think of terms such as lighting, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, noise, focal length, autofocus, image stabilisation and many more.

For example, it is important to know that the exposure of a photo changes when you adjust the shutter speed and aperture value.

The shutter speed is how long it takes to take a photo. The longer the shutter speed, the more light enters.

The aperture value is the size of the opening in the lens. The larger the opening, the more light enters. A long shutter speed makes a photo less sharp and causes more movement to be visible.

A low aperture value, or number, causes objects in the background to be shown less sharply than the foreground. This shows that you can already do a lot with the settings to influence the final result.

By taking a photography course, you quickly learn the most important basics you need to improve and really understand photography.

Tip 4 - Take a course

You may well be scratching your head after reading this information. Learning the rules of photography is quite complicated for beginners.

People often think that photography is no more than pressing a button and 'shooting pictures', but the opposite is true. To help you master photography and motivate yourself, I recommend taking a course.

Have a look at the Photofacts Academy courses. In these courses, you learn everything about the types of cameras that exist. You then learn about the different lenses and the effect they have on your photos.

You also learn everything about exposure settings, photo editing software and the most important photography terms. The most important thing? The course enables you to grow from beginner to a professional level in no time!

Important tip before you start with photography

As mentioned, it is important not to spend too much money on your first camera. Many people who want to start with photography quickly give up, which is a real shame when it comes to the money.

Another tip is that it is important to practise a lot. Theory is important, but you learn most by actually going out and practising.

P.S. It can also be fun for children to start with photography at an early age. You do not need to make it too complicated. Start with an old camera of your own, a special children's camera or even a Polaroid camera.

Finally, the most important thing is to have fun. We learn new skills best when we enjoy ourselves.

Go out with others and share photos with each other. Give each other feedback and enjoy the experience. That way, you can grow into a brilliant photographer!
