We received a copy of the 2nd edition of the book Landscape & Architecture by Bas Meelker and Pieter Dhaeze from publisher Van Duuren Media.

The book is a co-production by Bas Meelker and Pieter Dhaeze. I have become an admirer of Bas Meelker's photography, and, after attending one of his talks during a Canon product presentation, also of his way of explaining things and his presence.
Pieter Dhaeze is only familiar to me by name and from the 'More aware and better' series of photography books. He has already published quite a few works and is a well-known writer of photography books. He also provides advice, gives talks and offers tailored training courses.
The book Landscape & Architecture is part of the Focus on Photography series. This series consists of a number of titles specially developed and written for the field of photography. This book has practical content that you can immediately apply in practice. It is also a useful reference work and a recurring source of inspiration.

Contents
The book has 186 pages and a logical chapter structure. Chapters 1, 2 and 3 establish the framework.
- Definitions: Landscape and Architecture;
- Technique: Camera, Lenses, Accessories, Settings, RAW/JPEG, sRGB/AdobeRGB and Monitor Calibration;
Composition; - Composition: Viewpoint and perspective, Division of the frame, Guiding the eye, Image format, Graphic, Decisive moment, Light and weather, and Movement.
- Then it moves on to Practice: Know what you want, Preparation, Settings, Directing or not directing, and Rights;
- Then you go deeper into the subject: Image editing in RAW: Adobe Lightroom;
- Further study (this is where the special techniques are covered, such as HDR, Black and White, and Panorama);
- In the final chapter, Cases, photographs are demonstrated. Not only are the (boring) technical details provided, but they are also explained.

Landscape and architectural photography do not seem very closely related to me. And in the book, the emphasis is also much more on landscape than on architectural photography. That is naturally more Bas's area. But personally, it did not bother me.
The book was written by Bas Meelker and Pieter Dhaeze, but you find almost nothing about the authors in it. I could see that most of the photographs in the book were taken by Bas. You might then assume that the text was written by Pieter, but that is not entirely clear.
That is a shame, because it would make the book a little more personal. I also think it is a shame that the book is written using the formal form of address, which also creates some distance.

Conclusion
The book is beautifully finished, with high-quality paper, a sturdy cover, beautiful photographs, and clear, easy-to-understand text. I did learn quite a bit from it, and I read the book from cover to cover in one sitting.
I found the explanation of the various lens aberrations an eye-opener. The illustrations and explanatory photographs show barrel and pincushion distortion, chromatic aberration, vignetting, corner softness, reflection and perspective distortion. If you photograph in RAW, these can be corrected very well in software.
It also explains in detail exactly how a tilt-shift lens works. In such a way that I now understand it 100 per cent!

Price and where to buy?
Van Duuren Media offers its readers a useful service. You can register the book and then receive some extra content in addition to the web version of the book.
The book normally costs 32.99 euros, but it is temporarily available for just 29.99 euros, until 30 April.
