Photographer duo Zuijderwijk/Vergouwe presented their first joint book on 4 April at the NewWerktheater in Amsterdam. The new photobook brings together a selection of the abstract black-and-white images from their Mapping series.
The main theme in the work is the relationship between people and nature. The artists explore this theme by using artificial light to create a visible intervention in the landscape.

The Mapping series was photographed in Scotland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden in 2018. Lines were projected onto rock formations using a laser pointer. The scans created after the projection visualise some of the infinite possibilities for experiencing the landscape.
All the images were made on location without using image manipulation. Alongside subjectivism, Zuijderwijk/Vergouwe use the series to study the human tendency to structure, organise and understand the landscape.

Creative agency …,staat is responsible for the book design, and printer Lenoirschuring for the lithography and high-quality printing. The photobook was realised partly through crowdfunding and with support from the Mondriaan Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK).
The English-language book includes an essay by curator Maartje van den Heuvel and geologist Fiona Menzies. A numbered Special Edition with an Art print is also available. A selection of the photographs can be seen until 31 May at café-restaurant and exhibition space NewWerktheater in Amsterdam.
Daan Zuijderwijk (1974) and Maaike Vergouwe (1978) studied photography at the St.Joost Art Academy in Breda. They have formed an artist duo since 2006 and regularly exhibit their autonomous work. Their work is also included in the collections of companies and private collectors.
Over the past two years, the artists have travelled through Europe in a campervan with their three young children, looking for special landscapes to work in and experience. The journey will soon continue by sailboat. To establish a new, open relationship with nature and express this in their artistic work.
Price Mapping book: 39 euros and Mapping Special Edition Box: 165 euros
