A photo studio is a wonderful place to create your own world. These studio portraits by Koos Breukel (1962) were made between 2011 and 2018. From his daily life, his inner world, this is a selection of people who rose above the group or situation when they came in.

You could therefore call them fantastic misfits. People with strong personalities, marked and full of character. I saw this special series at the Fotofestival in Naarden.

On all kinds of occasions, Koos Breukel invited people to pose in his studio. Sometimes for an assignment, such as the writers in this series, and at other times on an improvised basis.

On certain occasions, such as the annual fair in Volendam or the Ballo Mascherato in Venice, the studio moved outdoors: to a circus tent at the fair or to a Venetian Palazzo.
