Last night, there was another episode of Het Perfecte Plaatje on RTL4. The four remaining contestants worked on observation photos and reflection portraits.

Observation photos

A striking assignment this week, taking observation photos for the BSD, a security service. Photography itself was not really that important in this assignment. It was about the staging and taking a photo in which everything was clearly visible.

A boot transaction had been set up, which the contestants had to photograph from the bushes. It was important that the 'suspects' and the transaction were clearly visible. This was to ensure that the photos would provide good evidence in court.

Even though everything had been staged, judging by the reactions of the Dutch celebrities, it still seemed to work well for the adrenaline.

I understand that an assignment like this would be quite a challenge in real life. You really must not be seen, and of course you never know exactly where something is going to happen. That makes it difficult to judge the best place and the best moment for your shot.

Kees won this assignment. He captured the right moment of the handover, including a suspect whose entire face was still clearly visible.

They used the full-frame Canon 6D mark II and a 100-400mm telephoto zoom lens for these photos.

Interestingly enough, plenty of mistakes were still made. For example, the women forgot to zoom the telephoto lens in fully to make the action clearly visible in the frame.

Reflection portraits

The second assignment was to take a reflection portrait. In Rotterdam, they all had to take a photo in which the subject was visible in a reflection.

The person they had to photograph was someone known to the photographer. So they had to photograph a friend, a father, a son and a daughter.

The guest judge for this assignment was portrait photographer Rick Arnold. The contestants used the Canon EOS RP and could choose between a 50mm, a 24-105mm or a 35mm lens.

Unfortunately, Froukje did not complete either assignment well and had to leave the programme this week.

Home assignment

This week's home assignment is to take a reflection photo. On the Canon YouTube channel, you can discover how to do this, or watch the video below.

Next week

Next week is the semi-final with the three remaining contestants. In this episode, they will work on a Trash the Dress shoot and photograph a night shift.

Ridiculous advertising program from Canon. Why not with less well-known Dutch people, e.g. members of a photography club or something.

Strange that Froukje had to leave, while Jamie didn't complete the assignment.
