Het Perfecte Plaatje; underwater dogs and nudes

Tonight was the second episode of the third season of Het Perfecte Plaatje. The Dutch celebrities had to photograph dogs in the water and nude models in an old factory hall. Two challenging assignments.

Underwater dogs

A difficult combination: underwater photography and dogs as well. Underwater photography is already quite a challenge, but having to work with dogs as well makes it even more difficult.

In my eyes, that was also clear from the results. Personally, I did not think any of them really stood out in a positive way. What is striking is that the dogs' eyes can be seen in almost none of the photos. Just as when photographing people, I think it is important to see the eyes in a photo when photographing dogs.

The dog photos by Seth Casteel were mentioned as an example. These are of course beautiful images, which also set the expectations very high. The shoot and the results once again show how difficult it is in practice.

Ryanne won this assignment with the photo above. I understand the jury's comment about it being 'painterly', and it is not a bad photo. In any case, it does not make me particularly enthusiastic either.

For this shoot, the celebrities worked with a Canon PowerShot G7X mark II, a high-end compact camera. A practical choice for a shoot like this, because you do not have to be quite so precise with the focusing on a camera like this.

The camera was placed in an underwater housing and the participants could also use a flash setup. They were assisted during the shoot by Moon Jansen.

Nudes

The second shoot was the traditional nude shoot. In all three seasons of Het Perfecte Plaatje, the nude shoot has returned as one of the few, perhaps the only, fixed assignments.

The difficult thing about this shoot is that the end result seems to depend heavily on the model you happen to get. Lieke, with her royal blue colour, was therefore immediately faced with a difficult task, while Ruben and Tim had it relatively easy with the two beautiful women.

Personally, I thought Herman's photo, of the dark-skinned man with the canary, was very successful. Excellent lighting, a beautiful colour combination of green, brown and yellow, and very cleanly executed. On the other hand, I thought Marlijn's mediocre photo was a good example of how you can still take a mediocre photo despite having a beautiful woman in front of your lens.

Winning photo by Ruben

The winning photo was the one above, by Ruben. The jury was enthusiastic about the positioning of the model. Personally, I do not think the cropped leg and the messy left-hand side of the photo are particularly strong points. The pose and the moment were chosen well, though.

The celebrities photographed this second assignment with the Canon 6D mark II and a 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens. A fine combination for this type of photo. The photographers were assisted by Roeltje van de Sande Bakhuyzen.

In the end, Mari had to leave the programme.
What did you think of the programme this week?

    (been there done that...)
