Photographing the Strong Viking Obstacle Run

Yesterday there was another Strong Viking run in Wijchen. My nieces were taking part, so I was there to take photos too. The combination of mud and obstacles makes this a fun event to photograph.

The event takes place in Wijchen on the grounds of a recreational lake and is freely accessible to the public. So you do not have to pay an entrance fee to take photos there.

I live nearby, so I went by bike. If you go by car, bear in mind that it gets busy there.

A few months ago I photographed a similar event, the Strong Viking Mud Run, which resulted in some very dirty shoes. So this time I was prepared and put on boots. That was a sensible choice.

I also brought an umbrella along with my camera. Fortunately, it only rained for a short time, but the umbrella did come in handy.

Besides my nieces, I also photographed other participants, of course. Simply because it was a fun situation, but sometimes also because people often pose spontaneously when they see you with a camera.

If you recognise yourself, send me an email and I will send you the higher-resolution images I took of you. vrolijk

I took all my photos with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L, by the way. This is a perfect lens for situations like this. You can get close enough to take great photos without immediately getting covered in mud yourself.

As for the settings, I used an ISO between 100 and 400 and mainly shot in aperture-priority mode. This allowed me to get nicely blurred backgrounds in my photos with f/3.2, or something close to it depending on the situation.

Of course, it is important to keep an eye on your shutter speed. In situations like this, I prefer to take photos at a minimum of 1/500th. There is a lot of movement, after all, and you generally want to freeze it.

May I ask where I can see the rest of your photos from this run? And which day you were there?

I haven't shared the rest of the photos anywhere. Only those of my niece with my family.

And this was on Sunday, but it was last year's run, just to be clear.
