Adobe has released an update for the beta version of Photoshop. Generative Fill lets you add objects to your photos using artificial intelligence. The option goes a long way. Scott Kelby gave a live presentation about this new feature on 23 May 2023.

Generative Fill lets you generate content with just a few words. You select part of a photo and tell Photoshop what you want there. For example, you can add sheep to a landscape.

For now, these options are only available in Photoshop beta. They are not available in the normal version of Photoshop. They will eventually become available in the normal version.

Ach, ik heb daar maling aan. Het gaat mij uiteindelijk om het beeld. Ik ben er al wel aan gewend dat alles gemanipuleerd kan zijn. De meeste fotografen liegen immers de waarheid, nietwaar?

Het gaat nu makkelijker, sneller en veel beter dan op de handmatige manier, maar als je handig bent met PS dan kon alles ook al op de oude manier. Laten we niet vergeten dat elke foto geschiedenis is en een manipulatie van de werkelijkheid. Je brandpuntkeuze, diafragma, cameraprofiel, enzovoorts geven allemaal een eigen invulling van de context zoals die was ten tijde van het maken van de foto. Vrees dus niet voor de toekomst van de fotografie. In de gereedschapskist zitten weer hele nieuwe mogelijkheden en je bent vrij om die wel of niet te gebruiken.
Natuurlijk kunnen er helaas ook heel verkeerde dingen mee gedaan worden, maar dat geldt voor elke uitvinding. Daar hebben we bijvoorbeeld de Nobelprijs aan te danken.

Ik vind generative fill wel een handig gereedschap. Ik fotografeer graag oude gebouwen in steden. Vaak lopen daarbij voortdurend mensen in de weg of zijn er voertuigen die in de weg staan. Voor het verwijderen van mensen en voertuigen in dit voorbeeld juich ik dit gereedschap toe.

Ik heb ook ontdekt dat je er fantastische abstracte beelden mee kunt maken. Het is nog niet perfect maar dat gaat ongetwijfeld wel beter worden. Inderdaad een welkome aanvulling op de al bestaande mogelijkheden.

Ik stel vast dat beelden maken op basis van teksten met behulp van AI in ieder geval niets meer te maken heeft met fotografie. Op zich is het maken van beelden op die manier natuurlijk niet verkeerd, maar noem het dan geen foto.
