The wait is finally over. Canon has announced the long-awaited EOS R3 during a live broadcast. Although most of the specifications had already leaked, it is now official. You can get your hands on this camera from November.

With the Canon EOS R3, the manufacturer has brought a very advanced camera to the market, aimed at the professional segment. With 30 frames per second, eye-controlled autofocus and car/motorbike tracking, it is clear that this is a fully-fledged action camera.
The main specifications at a glance.
- New backside illuminated stacked 24.1-megapixel CMOS sensor
- 30 frames per second AF/AE tracking
- Shutter speed of up to 1/64,000 second with the electronic shutter
- Eye-control AF selection
- 5.76-megapixel EVF with optical viewfinder simulation
- Variable angle 4.1-megapixel LCD screen
- AF tracking for people, animals, racing cars and racing motorbikes
- Multi-functional hot shoe
- Focusing down to light levels of -7.5 EV
- 6K 60p video
- No 29:59-minute recording limit for video

The new sensor has particularly fast data transfer, which means that the notorious rolling shutter effect is greatly reduced or completely absent. This makes it possible to shoot at 30 frames per second while maintaining full autofocus tracking.
The shutter speed is particularly impressive, being 3 stops faster than on common models. The camera allows you to take photos at no less than 1/64,000 second. This makes it possible to freeze very fast movements.
One of the standout features is eye-control autofocus. After a calibration process, the camera can analyse the direction in which you are looking through the viewfinder and lock the focus point onto it.
Although this first appeared on an EOS camera in the early 1990s, the latest technology offers many improvements compared with then.

The video functions of the EOS R3 have been greatly improved compared with the other models. With 6K resolution and 60 frames per second, you can record in raw file format.
4K is of course also available, at up to 100 frames per second. There are various bitrates to choose from and the time limit of almost 30 minutes has been removed.
It is of course possible to record in C-log3 and 10-bit HDR-PQ format.
Price and availability
The Canon EOS R3 will be available from November at a price of approximately 6,100 euros.

I read the specs and thought wow, and wow again, and wow again. And then came the price.... wow... What incredibly advanced specs... There will surely be a target audience for it, but I'm afraid I'm not part of it... I'll put it on my Sinterklaas wish list just to be safe...
