Alongside the flash and two new digital SLR cameras, Canon has also announced the Canon EOS M50 today. This new mirrorless camera may well be Canon's most interesting announcement today.

Canon EOS M5 - white version

Canon EOS M50 specifications

- 24.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
- 4K video (25P)
- Slow-motion video in HD (720p, 120 fps)
- Up to 10 photos per second
- 3-inch tilting and swivelling touchscreen
- DIGIC 8 image processor
- ISO sensitivity: 100 - 25,600
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
- Microphone connection

The Canon M50 is aimed at beginner photographers. The Canon EOS M5 is still above it, for example. At least in terms of naming.

Although the M5 is more pleasant to use because of the extra buttons for selecting settings, the M50 is currently technically more advanced.

Unlike earlier Canon mirrorless cameras, you can now also turn the screen to the side. This makes it easy to use the camera for vlogging, for example.

That screen is interesting in any case. The 'Touch and Drag AF' feature is a nice example. It allows you to choose the focus point by sliding your finger across the display. This also works well when looking through the viewfinder, with the display switched 'off'.

The M50 is very compact, which also makes it suitable to carry with you regularly without having to lug a camera around. A compact camera with decent specifications and features.

Eye tracking

Earlier Canon cameras already had face tracking, which automatically focused on people's faces in the frame while focusing. With the M50, this goes a step further. The camera can now also detect people's eyes.

The camera automatically selects an eye, but you can quickly switch eyes manually if that is more convenient for focusing. I played around with it for a while and it works very intuitively.

Digic 8

This Canon is the first with the new DIGIC 8 image processor. It also enables the new CR3 format with a C-RAW option, which applies compression to the raw image data to make the photos 30 to 40 per cent smaller.

We will probably also see this DIGIC 8 processor in other new Canon cameras.

Price and availability

The Canon EOS M50 will be available from the beginning of April 2018 at a recommended retail price of 579 euros for the body. You can choose between a black or a white version.

An interesting kit is available for 969 euros. This kit includes the EOS M50 body with the EF-M 15-45mm, an EF mount adapter and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8
