Early this morning, Canon announced its first full-frame mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R. Following Nikon's recent move, Canon has finally started switching to mirrorless cameras too.

Finally?

As far as I'm concerned, Canon should have entered this high-end mirrorless camera segment two years ago. I think this would have stopped a lot of people from switching to other brands. I still use my Canon 5D mark III, but I now also have a Sony a7r III alongside it.

The reason Canon, and Nikon, took so long to make this switch is probably that they were afraid it would cannibalise their DSLR sales. However, they are currently losing a lot of sales that are now going to Sony, Fujifilm or another camera brand.

So it's good that the step has finally been taken towards a mature mirrorless camera with a large sensor. The big news today is actually not specifically this new camera, but the addition of a new R system that will become the basis for Canon's products for the coming, perhaps several decades.

The mirrorless camera has an advantage over DSLRs in almost every area of photography, so I expect the professional market to switch to this system quickly over the coming years.

Prices and availability

>The new Canon EOS R mirrorless camera will be available in shops in mid-October and has a recommended retail price of 2,539.99 euros (it's a shame Canon didn't manage to keep the price below 2,000 euros).

At the launch of the camera, you can immediately buy the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. This will cost 1,219 euros.

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM will cost 2,539 euros and should be available at the end of October.

The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM will become available together with the RF 35mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM at the end of December. The 28070mm will cost 3,299 euros, while the macro lens will cost 559 euros.

To continue using your existing EF-mount lenses, you can buy the mount adapters. The basic version will cost 119 euros. If you want the version with the control ring, you will pay 229 euros. These two adapters will be available as soon as the camera is released.

The other two mount adapters will follow in February. The Canon drop-in filter mount adapter EF-EOS R with drop-in Variable ND filter A will cost 459 euros. The Canon drop-in filter mount adapter EF-EOS R with drop-in circular polarising filter A will cost 339 euros.

If you want to undo the compactness of the new camera, you can also buy the BG-E22 Battery Grip right from the start for 339 euros.

    Hi Elja,
I'm curious about your first review.
I'm considering switching from my 7d mark ii to a 6d mark ii in the long run. Is the launch of this camera a reason to reconsider that switch and perhaps go for the Canon Eos R?
    Kind regards, Robin J.

@Robin; Yes, instead of the 6D Mark II (around 2,000 euros), I would seriously consider saving up a little longer for the EOS R with the EF adapter (around 2,600 euros).

I actually only see advantages of the EOS R compared to the 6D Mark II.
