If you already thought the Nikon P900's 83x zoom lens was impressive... Nikon has just announced the Nikon COOLPIX P1000, the new undisputed powerhouse among superzooms.
This new compact camera features 125x optical zoom with the most powerful range currently available, equivalent to 24-3000mm.
Whether capturing lunar landscapes, wildlife or aeroplanes in the distance, users can now capture subjects that were previously beyond their reach.

With this 16-megapixel camera, you can easily take stunning photos and videos, according to Nikon. The 125x optical zoom offers the world's largest zoom range of 24-3000mm.
According to Nikon, this provides enough zoom power to capture even details of craters on the moon.
A fast f/2.8-8 NIKKOR lens delivers excellent results in low light. Nikon's advanced lens technologies minimise distortion and provide remarkably sharp images, even when shooting at ultra-zoom focal lengths.
Thanks to RAW support, you can save uncompressed image files and export them to your favourite image-editing programme.
Filmmakers can also record super-telephoto video in 4K/UHD, perfect for filming wildlife in its natural habitat from a distance.

Matthieu van Vliet, General Manager at Nikon Benelux, says:
If you want to photograph a supermoon or film young birds leaving the nest, the COOLPIX P1000 is the perfect camera for the job.
Thanks to its incredible zoom range, from wide-angle to super-telephoto, you have the freedom to zoom out and capture the entire subject or zoom in on the smallest details.
This compact camera with mega zoom also weighs less than a quarter of the weight of a D-SLR camera with a super-telephoto lens, making it particularly suitable for use on walks or while travelling.
Overview of key features:
Extremely powerful zoom. The possibilities are now limitless. Shoot with 125x optical zoom, 24-3000mm, and 250x Dynamic Fine Zoom, 6000mm.**/***
Stunningly clear images. The combination of the fast f/2.8 NIKKOR lens, 16-megapixel image sensor, EXPEED image processing and RAW support delivers very sharp results.
Super-telephoto 4K films. Easily record 4K/UHD movies at 30p or record Full HD video, 1080p, with a frame rate of up to 60p. Record videos with stereo sound and benefit from uncompressed HDMI output.
Stable images. Dual-detect optical vibration reduction, VR, counteracts the effects of camera shake for sharper photos and videos. Vibration reduction in Active mode provides a more stable viewfinder and monitor image.
Every perspective. The bright 3.2-inch LCD monitor with 921,000 dots can be tilted and rotated in almost any direction.
Smooth zoom control. A large grip and side zoom control make operation easier. The snap-back zoom button immediately retracts the lens from super-telephoto zoom to a wider angle, making it easy to bring subjects that have moved out of frame back into view.
Perfect results. Thanks to RAW support, users can save uncompressed image files and get the most out of their images in an image-editing programme.
Share wonderful images. SnapBridge technology allows users to synchronise photos with a smart device while shooting. SnapBridge also makes it possible to control the camera remotely with your smart device.

Price and availability
The COOLPIX P1000 will be available from early September 2018 for a recommended retail price of 1099 euros including VAT.
SnapBridge compatible
Nikon's SnapBridge app must be installed on a compatible smart device before SnapBridge can be used with this camera.
Footnotes
*As at 10 July 2018
** 35mm equivalent
*** The magnification of Dynamic Fine Zoom is calculated from the maximum wide-angle position of the optical zoom.

I am not a birdwatcher either but the result of a few weeks in Gambia is quite impressive. Fine enlargements up to 40x50 cm. I will definitely switch to the P 1000 now that it is equipped with raw.

The resolving power of the P900 was barely 2MP when you zoomed in. The P1000 has a resolving power of 1.2MP when zoomed in (in the best case). You can already see in the viewfinder that the image is blurry at maximum zoom. In short: nothing better than, for example, a Sony RX10 III whose image you crop afterwards.

Then there is the fact that it is an enormously large device, is heavy and the center of gravity shifts considerably forward when you zoom in.
