Sony has just announced its latest compact camera: the Sony RX100 VII. We were allowed to try it out briefly in Ireland. You can read our findings here.
The camera
This seventh version in the series has some impressive specifications:
- Animal and Human Eye Autofocus
- Realtime Tracking
- A single burst of no fewer than 90 frames per second
- Built-in SteadyShot for 4K recording
- The ability to shoot vertically
- A handy microphone input
In practice
The camera is fairly small and light, and feels solid. The built-in flash is well hidden and pops open at the press of a button. The menu structure feels familiar and the built-in image stabilisation works really well.
During the demo, we were able to use it for half an hour. The burst mode is truly impressive. At no fewer than 90 frames per second, it felt as if we were in the middle of a scene with bullets flying past our ears. It's not for nothing that Sony says the Sony RX100 VII is a smaller A9.

The difference from its predecessor
Like its predecessor, the Sony RX100 VII features a Sony 24-200mm f/2.8-4.5. However, a number of improvements have been made, such as:
- 357-point phase-detection autofocus, with an autofocus time of 0.02 seconds
- Animal and Human Eye Autofocus
- Realtime Tracking
- 4K SteadyShot and vertical shooting
This camera is therefore ideally suited to keen photographers who want to take the next step, as well as vloggers. The tilting and rotating screen is ideal for vloggers and for taking fun selfies.
This also makes the camera very suitable for travel photography. The camera is very small and light, making it easy to store in a small bag or even in your breast pocket.
What's more, you can take beautiful and, above all, spontaneous photos with a small camera. Many people are not intimidated by a small camera, while a Canon 1DX Mark II combined with a 70-200mm quickly attracts attention.
Conclusion
The Sony RX100 VII is an ideal compact camera for travelling. Thanks to its optical range, you can manage well with this camera and you will never be bored with the Single Burst.
We did not have the camera in our hands for very long, so perhaps you will soon find a more extensive review here.
However, within a short period of time I was already thoroughly convinced of the quality, speed and technology of Sony's latest compact camera.

Sandra wrote on Tuesday 30 July 2019 at 12:31 | replyMet mijn eerste Sony compact camera DSC-WX350 ben ik best tevreden.

HAJ Hofland wrote on Tuesday 30 July 2019 at 14:43 | replyBen in het bezit van twee RX100 camera's.
